The Nougat Tradition in Spain: A Sweet Legacy

Nougat, or "turron" is one of the most iconic sweets of Spanish gastronomy, with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. This delicacy has its roots in the Arab influence that introduced the use of almonds and honey in the Iberian Peninsula. Over time, the recipe was perfected and became the nougat we know today.

Nougat Varieties
  • Alicante nougat: Known for its crunchy texture, it is made with toasted almonds, honey and sugar. Its preparation at high temperature results in a firm sweet that is cut into tablets.
  • Turrón de Jijona: This type has a softer and creamier texture, thanks to the mixture of ground almonds, honey and sugar. Its low temperature cooking process produces a nougat that crumbles easily.
Nougat in Spanish Culture

Nougat is more than just a sweet; it is a symbol of Spanish tradition and culture. Its presence in celebrations and gatherings reflects the importance of culinary traditions in everyday life. Moreover, the production of nougat combines artisanal techniques with modern innovations, guaranteeing its quality and adaptability to current tastes.

Turron continues to be a popular gift and a central element in Spanish gastronomy, representing a sweet legacy that endures through time.
